There are a lot of different brands of modems with three main types; software, powered and USB. Powered modems require them to be plugged into an electrical outlet in order for them to receive power. USB modems plug into your laptop or desktop to receive their power in order to operate. Software modems are much less expensive but slow your computer down because they rely on the computer to do the work instead of the hardware doing as is done by the powered type.
